Mindful Moderation
We all love a fresh start. A new beginning. A way to feel like and become a better person. It’s the start of 2020 and I’m hearing a lot of people saying “I’m doing a cleanse” or “I’m doing Dry January” or “I’m taking a break from social media…” It’s a great time of year to make positive changes!
Vowing not to drink or swearing off carbs can be a powerful jumpstart to breaking bad habits or a way to challenge yourself. But cutting out things completely can also lead to disappointment and self-loathing when you veer off course.
If you decide that now’s the time to make some changes in your life, think about what will realistically work for you, and support yourself by avoiding tempting situations. What’s most important to keep in mind is that when you reintroduce wine, chocolate, Instagram or Netflix you retain your new sense of discipline and moderation.
What works for me isn’t eliminating a food or activity—it’s more about getting out of the habit of either eating mindlessly or drinking without being conscious of the amount. So, instead of dieting or giving up alcohol, I’ve decided to eat and drink with greater awareness. As a result, I eat and drink more slowly and I appreciate and am more mindful about my consumption.
Technique of the week: Words can be very powerful and one of the ways I support my intentions is by using a mantra. I’ve chosen the mantra, “I practice mindful moderation.” What will yours be?
